Designing investment pathways across agricultural value chains

Agricultural value chains remain among the most under-served real-economy systems in East Africa, despite their contribution to employment, food systems and export potential. The constraint is rarely a shortage of interest. It is the difficulty of turning fragmented production, informal aggregation and thin processing capacity into a financing structure that investors can underwrite.
Map the chain before you structure the capital
Investment pathways differ at each node. Production finance is exposed to weather, inputs and land tenure. Aggregation depends on working capital, storage and logistics. Processing requires patient capital, reliable throughput and offtake. Distribution and supporting services — from cold chain to digital market information — often determine whether the rest of the chain can perform.
CAPIDOM assesses these nodes together. Sector and value-chain mapping, enterprise segmentation, and demand-and-supply analysis identify where financing gaps originate, how they affect different actors, and which interventions are most likely to improve viability.
From diagnosis to a workable structure
Once the constraints are clear, the financing response can be designed around them: blended instruments where risk-sharing is required, working-capital facilities where cash cycles are the bottleneck, or project-preparation support where opportunities are not yet investment-ready. Technology and data are used where they improve visibility, accessibility and decision-making — not as a substitute for commercial fundamentals.
A financing structure is only as strong as the market conditions around it.
Institutions investing in agriculture need structures that are locally grounded and institutionally credible. That means governance, risk, return and impact expectations that can survive contact with how the chain actually operates.
